Crawford County Memorial Hospital Adds Vascular Access Services

Patients needing infusion therapy or similar treatments at Crawford County Memorial Hospital will now be able to take advantage of a new PICC line (peripherally inserted central catheter) service provided by Vascular Access Plus, a nurse‐owned company from Omaha, NE. The service is available to CCMH and its patients 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.

Vascular access means accessing a vein to place an intravenous (IV) catheter to give intravenous (IV) medications. Some IV medications are caustic to veins and cannot be given in a small vein like those in your hand or arm. Typically, those irritating medications must be given directly into circulatory system by the heart to minimize any potential damage from the medications. The type of vascular access needed by a patient is also determined by the length of time and frequency the medication will be given. Typical vascular access patients include those undergoing chemotherapy or infusion treatments.

“We’re thrilled to be providing services to the patients of Crawford County Memorial Hospital,” said Jamie Hamm, owner of Vascular Access Plus. “We look forward to improving and expanding the care options available in the area, and we are excited to collaborate with CCMH in order to provide high quality vascular access services in Iowa." Vascular Access Plus already provides services for a number of long term care facilities and hospitals in Nebraska including Alegent Creighton University Medical Center in Omaha.

By utilizing ultrasound technology, Vascular Access Plus has a 99% success rate in obtaining vascular access and a 0% infection rate for vascular access insertions. The effectiveness of this procedure increases patient comfort and satisfaction and decreases the length of a hospital stay.

Vascular Access Plus also provides MIDline service. This procedure is a more advanced version of the PICC line and creates a peripheral IV that can be left in for more than three days.

Vascular Access Plus is comprised of highly skilled clinicians dedicated to providing patients with high quality vascular access care including insertion, maintenance, infusion and education. The company is committed to meeting the varied needs of consumers by providing holistic care that is safe, effective and patient‐centered and that draws upon the most current innovations and evidence in the field.
